Der Ohlsen "Spinifex are spinning a carousel of adventurous Free and Vocal Jazz, Jazzcore and what our forefathers called World Music, on which Mats Gustafsson's The End and Christian Vander's Magma are chasing each other's wiggling tails. Absolutely bonkers and brilliant experimental fun!"

about

Spinifex shows the back of its tongue with Spinifex Sings, an album that features extraordinary vocalists Priya Purushothaman from Mumbai and Björk Níelsdóttir from Iceland. Spinifex Sings combines free improv, polyrhythmic punk-rock and rigorously composed structures with contemporary and ancient Tamil, Kashmiri and Icelandic poetry.
Spinifex Sings was recorded in Lisbon in July 2022, mixed and mastered by Philipp Moser, and it comes with beautiful artwork designed by Geraldine MacDonald, and a booklet containing the lyrics.

Amsterdam-based Spinifex, named after a tough Australian species of grass, may at first sound like a combination of free jazz, punkrock and other typically Western contemporary music. However, beneath the surface the listener will discover ancient cyclical rhythms from Turkish and Indian musical cultures.
Dave Foxall (Jazz Journal, UK) wrote: "ambitious yet unpretentious, tight, catchy, but also fearlessly exploratory and experimental.”

Non-Western music encounters Western contemporary composed music and anarchic European free improv clashes with tightly structured math metal. Extremely tight irregular structures are contrasted with extensive free improvisations.
